This poem portrays the will and fighting spirit of an “underdog”—someone in a disadvantaged position—who refuses to give up. Even in the face of defeat or adversity, it questions the meaning of holding onto one’s pride and continuing to strive. It powerfully affirms the mindset of turning even youthful overconfidence into strength, and of always preparing for a comeback.
“Underdog”
I don’t want to be a loser.
My pride still remains.
I refuse to accept humiliation.
My fighting spirit rejects surrender.
A chance to come back will surely come—
focus on what must be done.
Will you give up,
thinking you cannot win?
In fierce competition,
there’s no strength left to spare.
Do you just want to be praised
for quitting gracefully?
In disadvantage, stay calm.
Before surrendering,
there is always something left.
Use your wits—resist.
Are you afraid to fail?
You won’t know
until you try.
Leaving it to chance is foolish.
Keep challenging yourself
until you burn out.
You won’t know the outcome
until it comes—
apply pressure to your opponent.
Do you truly believe
you are not inferior?
Even in defeat,
leave no regrets.
The moment you accept inferiority,
it is decided.
Respect your opponent—
but only after it’s over.
Even in loss,
find value in the process.
Life’s trials
have only just begun.
Is it youthful overconfidence?
Even so,
it gives you the courage
not to falter.
It fills you
with the power to rise.
It becomes the strength
to live through youth.
So prepare yourself
to rise
from being an underdog.
Written on May 6, 2026. Inspired by the film “Underdog.” As long as one never stops preparing, the chance to rise again will surely come.
